SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE AWARDED TO AFRICAN NEUROSURGEONS

Hassan II Foundation for the Prevention and Cure of Nervous System Diseases is pleased to announce that it strengthens its support of the training program for young African neurosurgeons enrolled in the WFNS-RTC (World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies-Rabat Training Center), with scholarships granted by two prestigious international institutions :

-ICESCO (the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has agreed to grant ten scholarships to ten young African doctors enrolled in the WFNS-RTC to cover their expenses during their training, namely five years. The WFNS-RTC team is happy to select, among the submitted applications waiting for more than a year for a grant, ten candidates. These ten candidates will integrate Africa 100 program, coordinated by Pr M. Samii.

-Leksell Gamma Knife Society has recognized the Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Unit at the NCR-NS (National Center for Rehabilitation and Neurosciences) at the UHC of Rabat as part of its training program. Therefore, it allows young doctors (especially neurosurgeons) who wish to begin studying or to broaden their knowledge in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery to carry out training of three months covered by an LGKS fellowship. This fellowship is kept for young African neurosurgeons (See call for applications on https://www.lgksociety.com/events-education/lars-leksell-radiosurgery-fellowships/

On this occasion, Prof. Abdeslam El Khamlichi, President of Hassan II Foundation and Director of the WFNS-RTC expresses his thanks and recognition to :

*The ICESCO, whose direct support to the WFNS-RTC will enable for the development of neurosurgery in Africa, which is a vital specialty for patients, but is severely lacking in many African countries
*The LGKS, whose support will enable to promote Radiosurgery, which is a technique with an exceptional input to the treatment of a high number of patients with nervous system diseases.

As a reminder, Hassan II Foundation is the main logistical and financial support of the WFNS-RTC since its beginning in 2002, through setting up new technologies in the NCR-NS to upgrade Moroccan neurosurgery, through the management of applicants’ files and scholarships granted to young African neurosurgeons under training and the support to continuing medical education.

Through this two-decade multi-institutional collaboration, 70 young neurosurgeons from 18 Subsaharan African countries have enrolled in the WFNS-RTC for full training in neurosurgery (37 have already finished and already practice neurosurgery in their home countries, and 33 are still under training, dispatched over 10 university neurosurgery departments in Rabat, Casablanca, Fez and Marrakech).
